Veterans Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit, is the largest provider of supportive services to veterans and their families across New England. We are looking for experienced addiction treatment professionals for our substance abuse treatment program located at Independence Hall in Shrewsbury, MA. Independence Hall offers a continuum of care, including inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment services, to assist individuals in achieving their recovery goals.  At Independence Hall we provide client-centered care and recovery-oriented treatment within a therapeutic environment for both veterans and non-veterans 18 years and older. The qualified candidate must be a team player, a creative problem solver, and have a passion for helping others. Veterans are encouraged to apply but veteran status is not a requirement. 

The following position works as an integral member of the treatment team and will be responsible for providing both case management and clinical counseling services.  Clientele reside within a 32-bed, inpatient substance abuse treatment program. Case Management responsibilities include assisting clients in applying for necessary services while residing within the program, to include development of aftercare plan and the development of a recovery support network for utilization after program discharge.  This includes coordinating referrals; following through with specific treatment plan goals, and follow up after client program discharge.  Communication with treatment team members and family is imperative to ensure appropriate linkage to resources and referrals. Counselor responsibilities include clinical coordination through individual counseling, group psychotherapy, and guidance in developing individual treatment plan and goals, and referrals to internal and external resources.  

This individual would be based out of the 59 South Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 location. This is a full-time position and has full benefits (health, dental, vision, 403B, paid time off, short/long term disability and life insurance, etc.). The hourly rate $19.23 and is non-negotiable. The schedule for this position is as follows, Sunday through Thursday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Must be able to pass a CORI and background investigation.  Must be able to start within two weeks of receiving a verbal offer.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs new client intake processing and assessment.
  • Assesses all new intakes to determine presence and extent of substance abuse history; completes evaluation reporting needs.
  • Develops and documents individualized treatment plans that address the needs and goals of the client for aftercare and clinical needs.
  • Utilizes appropriate treatment modalities based on client needs.
  • Provides individual counseling and education to assist in meeting client's treatment goals.
  • Facilitates client groups, as needed.
  • Maintains audit ready client files and documentation as required.
  • Collects statistics as required for reports; prepares required reports and paperwork.
  • Develops and facilitates process and educational programs.
  • Identifies opportunities for program improvement as needed.
  • Participates in continuing education to continually improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies and practices.
  • Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to client confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Attends and participates in all meetings as required.
  • Assists with medication observation, medication log documentation, and medication count practices.
  • Assists with supporting other direct care staff in maintaining program adherence to daily activity schedule and facility function.
  • Present superior communication skills and strategies with co-workers and clientele.
  • Schedules appointments, provides outreach to support attendance at scheduled treatment and human services appointments.
  • Conducts referrals and follow-up monitoring, and participates in discharge planning process.
  • Communicates with other service providers and family members, with appropriate releases, to coordinate the client's next level of treatment services.
  • Monitors treatment progress and implementation of the client's individual clinical treatment and aftercare plans.
  • Provides supportive case management necessary for individuals to access medical, social, vocational, educational, substance abuse and/or mental health treatment supports and community-based recovery services.
  • Identifies all medication being prescribed, assesses client adherence to medication as prescribed, and communicates with prescribers, as needed.
  • Conducts outreach activities to market Veterans Inc. programs and engage new referral sources.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Must have strong computer skills with intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a member of a treatment team.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to facilitate groups. 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology or related field from an accredited institution. Master's degree in related field highly valued.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years of substance abuse treatment or counseling experience required.
  3. Must be able to successfully pass a CORI/Background records check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Certification in alcohol and drug counseling, LADC I or II preferred.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of military culture, experience in working with veteran population and an understanding of veterans-related needs and issues preferred.
