Veterans Inc., the largest provider of services to veterans and their families throughout New England, is looking for a professional, highly motivated, detail-oriented, and skilled individual to fill the Assistant Controller position and become a valued member of Veterans Inc. team!

The ideal candidate will be experienced and detail oriented with a positive attitude and a strong sense of urgency. This individual must embrace change and be able to think outside the box while providing creative solutions to problems. The goal is to to keep the accounting and financial processes of the company up to standard and ensure accurate financial reporting and control.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ensuring proper recording of all grants, contracts, and agreements in the accounting system to ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.
  1. Analyzing financial data and presenting financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  2. Audit time and effort reporting of staff working on federal grants.
  3. Preparation of budgets and financial reports and overseeing their evaluations.
  4. Works closely with outside accountants on Annual Audit, UFR and 990. Reviews Payables (checks) to ensure proper allocation.
  5. Responsible for month end closing and preparation of quarterly financial reports for Board of Directors. 
  6. Protects business operations by keeping financial, grant and business information, confidential.
  7. Assists in special projects as assigned by the Vice President of Finance, Development and Administration, President/CEO, and/or Executive Director.
  8. Contributes to the mission of Veterans Inc. by collaborating across all levels of the organization to accomplish related results as needed.
  1. Other duties as assigned

 

This individual would be based out of 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.  All duties would be performed throughout the designated territory's surrounding cities and towns within the state.

Must be able to pass a CORI and background investigation.  Must be able to start within two weeks of receiving a job offer.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational, accounting, and time management skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills, basic accounting principles knowledge, documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis and multi-tasking skills
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable accounts payable/general ledger systems and procedures, financial chart of accounts and corporate procedures
  • Must have strong, technical understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Advanced knowledge of with Microsoft Excel.
  • Federal and state financial regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be a team player.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of Bachelors Degree in accounting, business administration, or relevant field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with accounting software (CRM, Salesforce, Greater Plains, Financial Edge).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Financial Edge software.
  • Auditing skills preferred (preparation, auditing, reports)
  • CPA or other professional accounting license/designation.
  • Prior management/leadership experience highly valued.
  • Prior experience working in nonprofit or grant accounting a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of office management and Budget (OMB) Circulars pertaining to nonprofit organizations.
